The Chhatrasal Legacy

Foundation of Chhatrasal Akhada

It is interesting to note that all the above-mentioned athletes, excluding Sakshi Malik, are products of Chhatrasal Stadium. The Chhatrasal Akhada was founded in 1988 by former Indian wrestler Satpal Singh, along with coaches Ramphal Mann (also known as Guru Ramphal) and Pradeep Sharma.

Satpal Singh’s Vision

Satpal Singh, who himself earned multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, missed out on an Olympic medal in 1972 and 1980. This gap in his illustrious career motivated him to start the Chhatrasal Akhada. “Ek mann mein tees thi (there was a pain in my heart of not winning an Olympic medal). That’s why I started the akhada at the Chhatrasal Stadium. I wanted to churn out Olympic medallists for the country,” Satpal told TOI. “Now we have produced not one, but six Olympic medallists.”

Modernizing the Akhada

Four years after its inception, Satpal recognized the need for mats in addition to the traditional dirt floors, which are famous in Indian wrestling. This was a crucial step in modernizing the training facilities at Chhatrasal.
