Manolo Marquez Takes Charge

The Indian Super League is set for a fresh start as Spanish coach Manolo Marquez steps in, succeeding Igor Stimac. Marquez, who will also continue his role with FC Goa, is eager to instill a new mindset in Indian players. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification out of reach, Marquez is focusing on improving player standards and encouraging them to seek opportunities abroad.

Embracing the Challenge

In his first media address since his appointment, Marquez emphasized the need for Indian players to step out of their comfort zones. He believes that the Indian Super League (ISL) has become a cozy haven for many players. “The level of Indian players can be better and can improve faster,” Marquez stated. “Everyone knows my feeling—maybe some players don’t like it—but they are very comfortable playing in the ISL. They are very comfortable in India.”

Marquez encouraged players to seek challenges beyond the domestic league. He stressed that even playing in lower-tier leagues abroad can lead to significant improvement. “You will grow when you play abroad. I’m not saying the top level, like the Premier League or La Liga. If you play in one division where the opponents are the same or better than you, you will improve 100 percent,” he explained.

Understanding Comfort Zones

Marquez acknowledged the comfort of playing in the Indian Super League but also highlighted the need for players to push their boundaries. He referenced Sandesh Jhingan’s stint at Croatian club HNK Sibenik during the 2021-22 season as an example. Despite the challenges, Jhingan’s experience abroad is seen as a valuable learning opportunity.

“I understand that life is very good for most of them in the ISL and it’s difficult for them to go abroad. For example, Sandesh tried to do it in Croatia,” Marquez said.

Mental Strength Matters

In addition to encouraging players to seek international experience, Marquez stressed the importance of mental strength. “In football, technique, tactics, and physique are very important,” he noted. “But if this doesn’t work (points to head), you cannot do anything, not only in football but also in your life.”

Marquez’s focus on mental resilience reflects his broader vision for the team’s development. He believes that building mental toughness is crucial for both personal and professional growth.

Upcoming Matches

The Indian men’s football team will have their next outing on September 9, 2024, when they face Syria in a friendly match. This game will be an opportunity for Marquez to implement his strategies and for the players to showcase their development under his guidance.

Conclusion

Manolo Marquez’s appointment as head coach signals a new chapter for Indian football. His advice to Indian players is clear: seek challenges abroad, enhance mental strength, and strive for continuous improvement. As the team prepares for their upcoming matches, Marquez’s vision could be pivotal in shaping a stronger and more competitive Indian football team. Stay updated with the latest from IPL365.
