India’s men’s hockey coach, Craig Fulton, has been working tirelessly to prepare the team for the Paris Olympic 2024 Match. Placed in a challenging pool with top teams like Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Argentina, and Ireland, the road ahead is tough. However, Fulton remains optimistic about India’s prospects.

Building Trust and Team Unity

When Craig Fulton took over as India’s men’s hockey coach last year, his primary focus was on building trust within the team. “Since taking over 14 months back, my main focus has been on building trust among the group,” Fulton shared in an exclusive interview. To enhance his efforts, he enlisted renowned mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who played a significant role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup victory.

Mental Conditioning and Preparation Camps

Paddy Upton joined the team in Paris, continuing his work on mental conditioning. As part of the preparation, Fulton organized a three-day camp with Swiss explorer Mike Horn. “We had a good preparation, we had a nice three-day training camp with Mike Horn in Switzerland. We worked on trust-building, team spirit, and unity there,” Fulton elaborated. Following this, the team trained in the Netherlands, playing several practice matches to fine-tune their skills.

Overcoming Historical Challenges

India’s bronze medal win at the Tokyo Olympics broke a 41-year-old medal drought. This achievement has raised expectations, which Fulton is well aware of. “Yes, I know about the expectations and we are fully prepared for that. India has a rich hockey legacy and my only endeavor is to continue the legacy,” he stated. Despite the pressure, Fulton emphasized that predicting outcomes is difficult due to the competitive nature of the Olympic 2024 Match.

Focus on Key Matches

India’s 16-member squad in Paris includes 11 players from the Tokyo Olympics and five debutants. Fulton stressed the importance of team chemistry over experience. “It doesn’t matter there are 11 experienced and five new players, what matters for me is who is playing well in the company of whom,” he explained. Veteran goalkeeper P R Sreejesh will be playing his fourth Olympics and plans to retire post-Games.

Tough Pool Matches Ahead

India is in a tough pool, facing formidable teams like Australia, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. Their campaign begins on July 27 against New Zealand, followed by matches against Argentina, Ireland, Belgium, and Australia. “On any day, anyone can beat the other but we just want to take it match by match. So, now our main focus is on New Zealand and from there, we will take it forward,” Fulton concluded.

Looking Beyond the Olympics

Hockey India recently named the core probable group for the men’s national camp in SAI, Bengaluru, in preparation for the Asian Champions Trophy in Hulunbuir City, China, in September. This group includes players who didn’t make the final cut for the Paris Olympics, along with members of the development and junior teams. After returning from Paris, the Olympic squad players will join the national camp on August 24 for further training.

Conclusion

India’s journey to the Paris Olympic 2024 Match is filled with challenges and high expectations. Under Craig Fulton’s guidance, the team has focused on building trust and unity, essential components for success. With a mix of experienced players and new talents, India is ready to face the top teams in their pool. While predicting outcomes is difficult, the team’s preparation and determination provide hope for a strong performance. Stay updated with the latest Olympic 2024 News from IPL365.
