Battling Through Illnesses

HS Prannoy, a seasoned Indian badminton player, has faced a series of health challenges, including a recent bout of chikungunya. Despite these setbacks, he is determined to make his Olympic debut at the age of 32. Prannoy, who hails from Kerala, has also overcome a chronic stomach disorder and a nagging back injury. His resilience and determination have kept him focused on his goal: competing in the Paris Olympic 2024 New later this month.

Preparing for the Olympics

Prannoy’s coach, RMV Gurusaidutt, who is also a former player, has been instrumental in helping him build stamina for the rigorous competition ahead. Gurusaidutt acknowledges the tough journey Prannoy has endured but remains optimistic about his progress. He believes that despite the recent illness, there won’t be significant changes in Prannoy’s training routine.

“The preparations that we started after the Australia Open are on point, and we are on the right track,” Gurusaidutt told PTI. He emphasized Prannoy’s dedication, stating, “Though he was struggling, he was showing up for training and giving his best.”

Overcoming Mental and Physical Challenges

Prannoy’s journey has not been easy. Following his world championship bronze in 2023, he was hit by another stomach disorder, similar to his previous chronic acid reflux problem. This condition made it difficult for him to eat without feeling nauseous, leading to multiple first-round exits in tournaments this year.

However, the coaching team has introduced specific drills to address these challenges. Gurusaidutt explained, “We wanted to introduce a few programs. Gopi sir (national coach Pullela Gopichand) thought he needed to play longer matches. Based on the last few tournaments, we felt people were trying to push him in terms of speed and long rallies.”

Improving Speed and Endurance

To prepare Prannoy for these challenges, the coaches have focused on drills that enhance his speed and ability to endure long rallies. “We wanted to make it easier for him in training, get his confidence up, and improve his fitness levels,” Gurusaidutt said. The goal is to ensure Prannoy feels comfortable dealing with sharp shots and cross-court plays, allowing him to regain his rhythm.

Flexibility and Unpredictability

Gurusaidutt also emphasized the need for Prannoy to be flexible and unpredictable in his play style. “We should have a counter when someone is attacking him, but also make sure he’s not too defensive. He has to mix things up and not be predictable,” he advised.

Prannoy’s Mindset

As Prannoy prepares for his maiden Olympics, he aims to keep things simple and avoid unnecessary pressure. In an earlier interview with PTI, he said, “I think everyone just wants to talk about Paris. But I just want to be a little bit more pressure-free, kind of enjoy it a little bit more and just take it as one more tournament in my career.”

Prannoy’s focus is on getting back to basics and maintaining his mental strength. “From a preparation point of view, it’s really important to get back to basics. I was not there mentally in a lot of matches. So, I think that’s what I tried to do – just try to be a little bit more simple and usual,” he added.

HS Prannoy’s journey to the Paris Olympic 2024 New is a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite numerous health challenges, he remains focused on his goal and continues to train hard. With the support of his coaches and a strong mental approach, Prannoy aims to make his mark at the Olympics and inspire many with his story of perseverance.
